You’ve put literally months into planning the perfect family Houston RV trip. You’ve rented the RV. You’ve reserved your spot at the campground. Everything is packed, you’ve crossed everything off of your checklist, you’ve set a schedule for what your family is going to do over the next week, and the activities are planned.
Everything seems set to go right as every thing has been planned out to the last detail. Plus, the Houston are a in general is already a great spot for RV trips. As Outdoorsy casually states, “Houston, TX is the perfect spot to start your next road trip.”
Sure enough, after a long trip you pull into the RV park, set up camp, cook burgers and s’mores over the fire and then have everybody tuck into their sleeping bags for a good night’s sleep to get fully rested and energize for the next day of fun.
But then just what you feared would happen the next day happens: it rains. As in it pours rain non-stop and it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up anytime soon.
Does this mean that your RV camping trip is now ruined? Only if you let it.
Here are five activities to do on a family Houston RV camping trip when it rains:
1 – Go On A Hike
Yes, you can still most certainly embark on a hike even if it’s still raining outside. The ground will be a bit muddier and you’ll have to wear ponchos or coats to help stay dry, but other than that there’s nothing to say that you still can’t go hiking.
Besides, if you go hiking on a trail in the middle of the woods, the branches and leaves of the trees will also help to provide some degree of protection from the rain. The only thing you’ll really have to watch out for is that the ground can be marginally more slippy as a result of the rain.
2 – Go Fishing
Another fun activity to do while it’s raining will be to go fishing. In fact, there are probably few better ways to spend a rainy day outside than to fish, and fish will often be more active when it’s raining outside as well. The right lures and bait are essential as well but probably the best place to start is with a Chatterbait, although tying a Chatterbait can prove to be a little tricky.
If you do decide to go fishing, you’ll just need to make sure that you remain within your legal bounds if you do. This is actually something that you should plan ahead of time, because you may need a license to fish legally (and if so, you won’t watch Fish and Game to catch you fishing without it). It’s also your responsibility to find out which fish are legal to keep, or if the area is ‘catch and release.’
3 – Explore The Local Town/City
Another idea for a rainy day would be to leave your RV park or campground entirely and instead explore the local area such as the nearby town or city.
Are there any restaurants you wanted to try, or maybe a museum, a large shopping mall, a science/convention center, historical or natural landmarks, or any other sort of tourist attraction? If so, it can be a great opportunity to check it out.
4 – Read and Relax
Kick back on a hammock outside or in a camping chair under the awning and just relax. Read a book if you brought any (which hopefully you did), or play board games and card games.
You can even take a nap if you want to. Hopefully the rain will subside soon and you’ll be able to get out and do one of the fun activities that you had planned, or otherwise try one of the other ideas in this list.
5 – Watch A Movie
Since you may already watch a lot of movies at home, this may not exactly seem like an incredibly fun thing to do on an RV trip.
But it still can be if you turn it into an event. You can make popcorn, bake s’mores, and just have as much fun with it as you can. It may not be what you had envisioned for an RV trip, but it’s better than doing nothing, right?
Activities For A Rainy Day
If it’s pouring rain non-stop outside on your RV trip you might have to make a few adjustments to what you had planned, but there are still a number of different activities that your family can all do together so you have fun. While rain may change your plans, it will hardly ruin your trip.
